Sir Walter Scott was a leading figure in the European Romantic movement. The pre-eminent collection of Scottish literary manuscripts from the 15th to the 19th centuries is at the National Library of Scotland. Our collections of the manuscripts and letters of Sir Walter Scott and Thomas Carlyle are the finest and most extensive in the world.

Edinburgh, Scotland,10th September Dr Iain Gordon Brown, a graduate of the Universities of Edinburgh and Cambridge, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and of the Royal Society of Edinburgh was, until his retirement inPrincipal Curator of Manuscripts in the National Library of Scotland.

Scotland, and particularly the city of Edinburgh, historically has been a major centre of book production. At the National Library of Scotland we hold a rich collection of publishers' collections, Archibald Constable — publisher of Sir Walter Scott's famous Waverley novels.

Manuscript Collections, National Library of Scotland - In addition to the largest collection of Scott correspondence, the National Library of Scotland holds the principal surviving portion of the autograph manuscript of Waverley and the manuscripts of Marmion, The Lord of the Isles, The Heart of Mid-Lothian, Redgauntlet, The Betrothed, The Fair Maid of Perth, Chronicles of the Canongate.
